Lost a full day rewiring a Vista 20P because a 2 foot staple job from 2019 shorted the keypad bus
Ngl I spent 6 hours last Thursday on a service call at a duplex in Rochester chasing a zone fault on a panel installed back in 2019. Turned out the original guy stapled the keypad bus wire tight against a joist and a staple finally cut through the jacket, so the green data wire was touching the stud plate and killing comms every time the furnace kicked on. I ended up running 30 feet of new 22/4 from the panel to the keypad just to get it stable. Has anyone else had a staple job bite them years later like that?
Question whether a two foot staple job from 2019 is really worth a full day of rewiring when you could have just re-stapled the bad section or taped the nick and moved on. Wires get nicked all the time and most of them sit there for years without the furnace kicking them into a fault, so calling this some kind of warning about every old install feels like a stretch. Fix it, sure, but treating one chewed jacket like a reason to rip out 30 feet of perfectly good wire seems like way more work than the problem calls for.
