A guy at my local anime club said my top 3 list was 'objectively wrong' and pulled out a whiteboard
Honestly I still think about this and it happened 8 months ago at our Thursday meetup in the back room of a pizza place in Sacramento. I said Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood was my number one and he stood up, grabbed a marker, and drew a whole chart of "narrative flaws" while like 12 people just watched. He kept saying the word "objectively" over and over and someone finally asked if he ranked shows by spreadsheet. I just wanted to eat my pizza and hear what everyone else was watching that season, not defend my taste like it was a thesis. Does your club have that one person who turns every favorite show chat into a debate, and how do you deal with them?
My cousin Ray did this exact thing at a Denny's in Modesto about four years back, except his chart was on a napkin and it was about why I was wrong for liking the English dub of Cowboy Bebop. He got so into it that he missed his food getting cold and the waitress came back three times asking if we were okay. The thing that gets me is these people never seem to just love a show, they love being right about it, which is a whole different hobby. Honestly the move that worked for me was just nodding along real calm and then asking what they were watching that season, because usually they have nothing new and that ends it fast. If that fails you can always hit them with a "cool, anyway" and turn to the person next to you. Some folks just want an audience and the trick is not being one.
