Dub vs sub changed for me after watching one specific scene

Three years ago I was a hardcore sub-only guy, thought dubs were for people who couldn't read. Last month I caught a clip of the latest season of a show I like with the English dub by accident, and something clicked. The voice actor delivered this quiet emotional line with a little crack in their voice that I completely missed in the Japanese version because I was reading subtitles. Now I rewatch episodes twice, once dubbed and once subbed, and it's like seeing two different performances. It feels weird to admit after all these years of arguing online, but the dub added a layer I never gave it credit for. Has anyone else flipped their stance this late in the game, or am I the only one who spent years being stubborn?

The Cowboy Bebop dub did it for me back in the day, but I ignored it for years because I was so locked into my sub-only mindset. Then I watched the scene where Spike talks to Julia near the end and the English voice actor hit this tired, broken tone that just landed harder for me than the original. It made me realize I was missing a whole performance while my eyes were glued to the bottom of the screen. Now I treat subs and dubs like two different versions of the same song, and honestly it doubled my enjoyment of shows I already loved. Being stubborn about it for so long feels pretty silly now, but I get why people stick to their side.
