I rewatched Cowboy Bebop in sub instead of dub after 8 years and felt like a total fake fan
For almost a decade I swore the English dub of Cowboy Bebop was flawless, and I would argue with anyone at my local shop in Denver who said otherwise. Then 3 weeks ago a friend handed me the Japanese audio and by episode 5 I realized I had been missing half the emotion in Spike's quieter scenes, not because the dub was bad but because I never actually compared them. So here's my question: do you judge a dub on its own or only against the sub, and which show made you flip sides?
Learned the hard way that I judge dubs way too easy when I don't have the sub sitting right next to it. I did the same thing with FMA Brotherhood and felt like a clown when I finally heard the Japanese take on Ed's breakdown scenes. Fullmetal Alchemist is what made me switch sides for real, the raw yelling just hits different when you hear the voice actor actually strain. Now I try to watch at least a few eps of both before I run my mouth.
