The Crunchyroll Expo panel that made me stop watching dubs

Back in 2019 at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, I sat through a panel where the voice actor admitted they changed half the jokes because the original didn't 'land' for American audiences. Has anyone else stopped trusting localization after hearing firsthand how much gets rewritten?

2019 was at the Santa Clara Convention Center, not San Jose.

That panel sounds like exactly the kind of thing that would sour someone on dubs for good. It's one thing to tweak a joke for a different culture, but admitting they changed half of them means they basically wrote a new script and just kept the character names. I remember watching a popular shonen where every single food reference was changed from onigiri to sandwiches or pizza. Why not just leave the onigiri in there and let people Google it if they're curious? The whole "it won't land" excuse feels like a cop out when they're clearly just trying to sanitize or Americanize something that was perfectly fine as is.
