Pro tip: that $12 thermal fuse I keep in my van saved a $400 dryer repair in Boise last week
Had a call last Tuesday on a 6 year old electric dryer in Boise, lady said it ran but had zero heat. I could have just told her the heating element was shot and quoted her $180 in parts plus labor, easy money right there. But I threw my meter on the thermal fuse first and it was wide open, so I swapped in a $12 fuse off my van and she was drying towels in 20 minutes. Here is where I want to hear from you guys, because half the techs I know say always replace the element too while you are in there, and the other half say if the fuse blew there was a reason and the element is fine, leave it alone. I did the cheap fix and told her to call me if it pops again, but now I am second guessing myself. Do you replace just the fuse or do you upsell the element and thermostat as a package? And does it change your answer if the vent was clogged, because hers had about 2 inches of lint packed in the flex line and that is probably what killed the fuse in the first place. Real answers only, I am not trying to start a fight about it lol.
