Vent: I called bull on thermal paste on fridge compressors, then a guy in Tulsa proved me wrong
A guy I trained with kept saying to put a thin coat of thermal paste under fridge compressor relays and I told him it was a waste of time and money for like 2 years. Then I had a Whirlpool in a hot garage in Tulsa that kept tripping its overload every 3 days, and after I cleaned and pasted the relay base it ran 6 weeks straight with no callback, so now I do it on anything over 10 years old. Is this actually a real fix or did I just get lucky with one unit, because I want to hear if it holds up for you guys.
The trick nobody talks about is that it's not really the paste doing the work, it's the cleaning. Pulling the relay and scraping that black oxide and carbon gunk off the base drops the contact resistance way more than any paste adds. The paste just keeps it from coming back as fast since air can't get at the metal. So yeah your Tulsa unit was real, but I'd bet the scrub did most of it.
