Hot take: leaving big stumps to rot is lazier than proper removal and I've got the hours to back it up

I spent 7 hours grinding a 4 foot oak stump last Tuesday when the client insisted on full removal, but my coworker argued we could've just cut it low and let nature take its course, so which approach actually saves more time in the long run for you guys working residential?

7 hours is just admitting you lost the fight with a tree stump.

My neighbor's stump took me 8 hours last fall with a rental grinder, and @milam42 is right that I basically admitted defeat halfway through when the damn thing kept throwing rocks at my shins. The thing is, cutting it low and walking away sounds like a time saver until you trip over that leftover nub while mowing and break a belt on your mower deck. In my experience, a 4 foot oak stump left to rot will still be there mocking you 3 years later while the new grass is all patchy and sad. So yeah, maybe I lost the fight with that stump, but at least now I'm not fighting it again next spring.

@king.dakota My buddy used a grinder and hit a gas line, so at least you got rocks.
