Tried using a ratchet strap to close a big split in a maple limb instead of just cutting it off... and it actually worked.

We were at a job in the Green Hills area, dealing with a mature silver maple that had a nasty vertical split in a major limb, about 8 feet out from the trunk. The homeowner really wanted to save the limb if possible. Instead of going straight for the removal cut, we cinched a heavy-duty 2-inch ratchet strap around the limb, right above the split, and tightened it just enough to close the gap. Then we installed a cable brace higher up. It's been two years now and the tree is fine, the callus is forming over it. I was sure it was a long shot. Has anyone else had luck with a similar quick fix for splits, or is this just asking for trouble down the line?

Would have called that a waste of time a few years ago. Your two-year update is pretty convincing though.

Honestly that's wild it held up, nice save! @tyler822 I get the doubt, but makes me wonder about the long-term pressure on the wood inside the strap. Like, is it just squeezing the split shut but also maybe crushing some healthy fibers over time? Still, two years with a good callus is hard to argue with lol.
