A debate on the Sutton Hoo helmet restoration
I was reading about the 1939 Sutton Hoo dig in Suffolk, and the helmet reconstruction is a big debate. One side says the 1970s museum version, which filled in the missing pieces, helped the public understand it. The other side argues that was guesswork and we should only show the actual fragments we have. Which approach do you think is better for showing finds to people?

Reminds me of seeing the Lewis Chessmen in Edinburgh. They have a mix, some pieces totally restored, others just the original lumps of walrus ivory. Honestly, staring at a lump, I had no clue it was a king. Needed that full piece next to it to make the connection.

Yeah, staring at a lump and calling it a king is basically my whole art history experience, @riley58. I'd need the labeled one right there too.

Can't believe you needed a labeled version to figure out a walrus tusk... that's wild.
