A local farmer in Ireland showed me his field and now I can't stop looking at old maps
I was in County Meath last month visiting family and got talking to a farmer named Declan who has worked the same land for 40 years. He pointed to a slight bump in his field and said the grass grows greener over it because of an old ditch underneath. He has never dug anything up there, he just knows from watching the grass for decades. Turns out those bumps often mark old walls or houses that got plowed flat long ago, and archaeologists use the same trick from the air. Now I want to know if anyone here has used crop marks or soil changes to spot a site before digging a single hole.
