Do I give a zero or talk to them first about why it happened?

Give the zero no question. Art is about original creation, and copying steals that from everyone. A talk just gives excuses room to grow. Stick to the rules so they understand consequences matter.

Wait, real teaching isn't that simple. A talk can actually fix the problem instead of just punishing it.

Talk to them first, but @johngrant is right that a zero is fair for outright theft.
