I used to think stacking photos for deep space stuff was just a gimmick

For years I'd just take single long exposures of the Orion Nebula from my backyard, convinced stacking software was a waste of time. Then a guy at our local astronomy club in Boise showed me his stacked image from the same night, and the detail was like night and day. Has anyone else had a moment like that where a basic technique totally changed your results?

Honestly, I still think there's a purity to a single, well done exposure. All that stacking and processing can start to feel like making a digital painting, not a photo. I've seen some stacked images of the Horsehead Nebula where people crank the sliders so hard it looks like a neon sign. My single 5-minute shot from last winter might have more noise, but it feels real. The extra time spent on stacking could be used to drive to a darker site for a better single frame.

But what about the faint details you miss?
