Update: My old way of taking star photos was just sad

I used to just set my camera on a tripod in my backyard in Tucson and hope for the best, getting maybe 10 decent shots a year. Then I saw a photo from a guy using a star tracker he built for under $200 and it blew my mind. I saved up and got a basic Sky-Watcher mount last fall, and now I can actually capture the Orion Nebula without it looking like a fuzzy blob. How did you all make the jump from basic shots to real deep sky stuff?

What a waste of money.

Right? I saw the price tag and almost choked on my coffee. Could've bought a decent used car for what they spent on that ugly statue.
