That week I fixed a 1995 F-150 that had 8 different paint layers on the driver door
The owner said he'd been patching it up himself for 20 years and each time he just grabbed whatever rattle can was closest, so I spent three full days sanding down everything from gloss white to flat army green. Has anyone else dealt with a nightmare of mismatched factory versus hardware store paints that just WOULD NOT feather out?

I read somewhere that old Ford trucks from the 90s had really soft factory clear coats that basically ate whatever you sprayed on top. Sounds like that's exactly what happened here, your guy just kept layering on cheap paint and it all melted together into one big mess.

Bet those older trucks didn't even have clear coat from the factory, it was single stage paint, no melting problems.
