Rant: my left pitot heat wire looked fine until I wiggled it at 40 degrees in Boise
Flew into Boise on Tuesday with the pitot heat breaker popped and it reset fine on the ground, so I signed it off like an idiot. Next morning the crew chief wiggled the harness near the wing root and the insulation crumbled right off the wire at a spot I had probed clean the day before. Do you guys wiggle-test old harnesses before you call a breaker reset good, or am I the only one who got lazy on this one?
That bit about the insulation crumbling at the wing root after you probed it clean really hits home. I read an NTSB report a while back where the wire looked perfect until the plane got cold and the old insulation just gave up, so heat and flex can hide a bad spot. Wiggling while it's cold is about the only way to catch those, even if it feels like overkill.
