Took me 6 trips to realize my pack was riding 3 inches too low
My lower back was killing me after every hike, then a guy at a shelter in the Smokies just pointed at my hip belt and said 'that's supposed to sit on your hips, not your waist.' Has anyone else had that 'oh' moment with something you thought you had dialed in?

Nah I gotta disagree with the poles thing... they just add more stuff to fiddle with and honestly I see more people tripping over their own poles than I see getting real benefits. If your pack fits right you shouldn't need them for load support anyway, that's what the frame and hip belt are for. Plus you lose the natural arm swing that helps with balance and rhythm on the trail. I've done thousands of miles without poles and my back is fine... but I also spent those first 6 trips with my pack hanging off my shoulders like an idiot so what do I know.

Hiking poles might help take some load off your back too (if you don't already use them). Just make sure they're adjusted right, or you'll have another 'oh' moment when your shoulders start screaming.
