Bought a $22 plastic tarp for my firewood last fall, this year I spent $60 on a real canvas one and I get it now
Last October I stacked about a cord and a half of split oak behind the garage and threw a cheap blue tarp over it, weighed down with four cinder blocks. By January the tarp had shredded at the corners and water was running straight down the sides and pooling right at the bottom of the stack. When I pulled it off in March the bottom third of the wood was spongy and gray and I ended up tossing maybe 15 bucks worth of it. This year I went with a proper canvas cover from the feed store in town and the stack has stayed dry through two rainstorms already, plus it breathes so no mold. Anyone got a better setup for keeping a stack dry against a west facing wall?
Wait, is it actually the canvas that's doing the work, or is it the breathing thing? Because a tarp that traps moisture is just as bad as one that leaks, and that might be what killed your bottom third more than the rain did. Plastic tarps don't let anything out, so every bit of moisture in that wood plus any ground dampness just sits in there sweating all winter. Canvas lets it escape, which is why you're not seeing mold now. Your west wall spot is still getting hammered by afternoon sun and driving rain though, so you might want to leave a gap between the stack and the wall for air to move through.
