Shoutout to the guy at the True Value in Reno who asked why I store my gas cans on the garage floor
Been doing it 15 years until he pointed at the bottom of my 5 gallon can and I saw the rust ring... fumes sit low and eat the seam from the inside. What are you all setting yours on?

Wait, so the floor has been slowly pickling my gas cans this whole time and nobody told me? I had mine sitting right on the concrete for years and just figured the rust was from rain getting in or bad luck. The thing that gets me is the fumes are heavier than air, so they just pool down there in that little gap under the can and chew away at the seam where you can't even see it. It's like the can is slowly eating itself from the bottom up and you don't find out until it starts leaking in your garage. Guess I'm grabbing a scrap of plywood or one of those plastic trays this weekend like some kind of fancy gas can collector.
