Showerthought: my garage fridge died and took 30 pounds of frozen venison with it
Walked out to the garage Saturday morning and the old Kenmore fridge was warm inside with a puddle under the crisper drawer. Lost about 30 pounds of venison from last fall plus a half hog my buddy gave me, so I spent the afternoon hauling it all to the dump and scrubbing the smell out with bleach. Anyone know if a garage fridge is even worth replacing, or should I just get a chest freezer that can handle the heat?
Take that thought about the chest freezer and run with it, because the garage fridge is a losing game from the start. Those things are built to sit in a cool kitchen, so when it's 95 in your garage all summer the compressor is fighting for its life and the seals bake out. My uncle went through two garage fridges in four years before he gave up and bought a 7 cubic foot chest freezer. That thing has run in his shed for eight years now, pulls way less power, and holds a whole deer plus the hog with room to spare. Only catch is you gotta dig for stuff, so keep the meat in labeled bags and stack the older stuff on top. Sorry about the venison, that one stings.
