Dropped $340 on a mini split for my 120 sq ft shed studio and it ices up every time it runs past an hour
I built a 120 sq ft studio in my backyard in Boise last fall and thought I was being smart by skipping a window unit and going with a mini split. Spent $340 on the thing plus a weekend mounting it, and it frosts over solid after about 60 minutes of run time. Turns out the unit is sized for a room twice that big, so it short cycles and never pulls the humidity out. I should have just bought the $180 window unit my neighbor uses in his. Anyone else fight this and did you fix it by adding a dehumidifier or just eating the cost and swapping units?
Been down this exact road with a 200 sq ft garage build and it drove me nuts for weeks. Oversized units in small spaces just can't pull moisture out because they never run long enough to do the job, so the coil turns into a block of ice. A dehumidifier will help a little but the real fix is getting the right size unit, even if that means eating the cost.
