Just found out my county's setback rule for backyard studios is only 3 feet

Was looking at the permit site for my area. Always thought it was 10 feet from the property line. This changes my whole layout plan. Anyone else run into a surprise like that with their local codes?

That three foot rule is a game changer. Had the same thing happen with a deck project. The permit office had a whole packet of diagrams showing how to measure from the fence post, not the actual line. Saved me from moving a bunch of sprinkler lines. Definitely grab the official handout if they have one.

Remember reading a city code that said fences over six feet needed a permit, but they measured from the ground on the high side of the slope. @roberts.diana That little detail meant my neighbor's "eight foot" privacy screen was actually legal because his yard dropped off so steeply. Always pays to check how they define the starting point.
