A designer in Austin handed me her portfolio and I cringed at the neon green on black text
"If you have to squint, it's not edgy, it's broken," she told me, and now I notice every restaurant menu in my neighborhood does the same thing. It's been 3 weeks and I can't stop spotting dark mode sites with gray on black text, so what's the worst color combo you've seen lately?
My eyes are not great and I actually like gray on black for reading at night. A dim screen at 2am with white text feels like a flashlight to the face, so the softer gray is easier on me. The real problem is people picking gray that is way too dark, like #333 on pure black, and that is a choice problem, not a dark mode problem. Neon green on black is a whole other mess though, that one hurts no matter what. Bad combos bug me too, but the fix is better contrast, not scrapping dark mode.
