I think the fire exit sign at my old job was the real reason nobody could find the stairs
Everyone in this community loves to pile on the ugly stuff, the neon menus and the crooked stickers, but I think the worst design I ever saw was a plain green fire exit sign. I worked at a bowling alley in Reno for about a year and a half, and our back hallway had two doors that looked exactly the same. Same gray paint, same push bar, same tiny label. The only difference was one led to the parking lot and the other led to the mop closet. I watched a guy walk straight into the mop closet during a fire drill in front of maybe 40 people. Here is the part that surprised me. When I read through an old safety binder, I found out that our sign had been mounted at 5 feet 11 inches, which is apparently way off from the 80 inch standard in the code book. That one number explained so much. The sign sat right at eye level for a tall person and disappeared into the trim for anyone shorter. My manager said the tape measure was in the truck, so it stayed crooked for the rest of my time there. Does anyone here think a good sign is more about the number or more about the shape, because I keep going back and forth on it.
