PSA: my sign shop guy told me my parking lot arrows were backwards and it clicked
I drew up wayfinding signs for a 240 space lot in Boise and felt pretty good about them until the installer asked why my one way arrows pointed at the exit only lane. He said drivers follow the stripe on the ground, not the sign, so I flipped 9 of the 14 arrows and renumbered the aisles clockwise instead of zigzag. Anyone else get saved by a contractor who just points at the dumb thing?
The ground stripe thing is real. People look down before they look up, it's just how we're wired. Same deal with stop bars and hatched no-park zones, if the paint says one thing and the sign says another, the paint wins every time. One thing you might want to check now that you went clockwise, make sure the aisle numbers still line up with what the fire dept or the city has on file for that lot, because if they don't you'll get flagged on the next inspection. Also ask your striper to give you a simple plan sheet with the arrow directions before they paint, saves you a whole redo since paint isn't cheap to undo. Good catch by your installer, that guy saved you a mess.
