That hallway switch took 3 hours and won, I just use a lamp now
Rented a place in Denver last month and there is a three-way switch setup in the hallway that controls nothing in a pattern I still can't map. I spent a whole Saturday flipping every combination and timing how long before the bathroom light kicked on, it's like a 15 second delay every single time. The landlord said the previous tenant paid $400 to have it “fixed” and the electrician literally left a note taped inside the panel saying “can't figure out, don't touch.” Now I just leave a lamp on in the living room and navigate by phone flashlight, which is honestly safer than the flicker show. Why would someone wire a switch to a light that's in another room and then hide the actual switch behind the water heater? Has anyone else lived with a mystery switch that you just gave up on and learned to ignore?

Used to tell myself every mystery switch just meant lazy wiring or renters before me breaking stuff. Then my buddy bought a flip house and we found a switch in the master closet that controlled the porch light through a timer hidden in the attic, took us two weekends to map it and we still lost. Your landlord story beats that though, an electrician giving up is the real proof that some houses just run on chaos. I used to judge people who bought those remote outlet plugs, now I get it, sometimes you gotta fight stupid with stupider.
