Had a talk with a sign painter at a local shop and it changed how I see fonts

I was getting a quote on a banner last week and the guy behind the counter looked at my logo file. He asked why I picked a script font that looked like it was written with a wet finger. He said that font works fine for wedding invites but not for a sign that needs to be read from 20 feet away. I never really thought about how readability changes at different sizes. He showed me a few of his old samples and I could see the difference right away. Has anyone else had a pro give them a reality check on something you thought looked good?

Had to read that twice because it blew my mind. Never once stopped to think about how the physical paint itself reacts at distance on a sign. That's the kind of tiny detail nobody tells you about until you mess it up.

Did he explain why certain stroke widths break apart at distance?
