I finally fixed the jagged edges on my buddy's bait shop logo, 9 tries and 2 hours later
My buddy runs a bait shop down in Sandusky and his old logo was a fish that looked like it got hit by a truck. I told him I could clean it up in like 20 minutes. That was 3 weeks ago. The problem was the original file was a 400px JPEG off his old website, so every time I traced it the fins came out jagged no matter what I did in Illustrator. I tried the auto trace at 6 different settings, then gave up and redrew the thing by hand, and that took 2 hours by itself. Turned out the real fix was just starting from a clean grid and building the fish out of 3 simple shapes instead of tracing the mess. Now it looks sharp at any size, even on a 12 inch sign. Anybody else get suckered into a quick cleanup that turns into a full redraw?
