That minimalist logo trend is making everything unreadable

I was walking through a mall in Tampa and saw a storefront sign that was literally just a thin line and a dot - took me 5 minutes to figure out it was supposed to be a coffee cup. Why do designers keep making logos that look like abstract art instead of something people can actually recognize from across the street? Anyone else have trouble figuring out what a logo is supposed to be lately?

Gotta admit I used to be that guy who thought simpler logos looked cleaner and more professional. But after walking past three stores in my local strip mall and having zero clue what any of them sold, I completely get your point. A logo that needs a tldr explanation is basically failing at its one job.

Read an article about that exact problem recently," @grant569, "branding should communicate, not confuse.
