I picked the ugly red submit button over the pretty gray one, and my signups went up
Last month I was rebuilding the contact form on my little landscaping site and got stuck between a slick gray-outline button and a big flat red one. I went with the red one even though it clashed with everything, because a guy on a forum said people kept missing his gray button on a beige page. First week after I put it in, form fills went from 3 to 11, and two people actually wrote 'the red button helped' in the notes field. Turns out a button that looks a little out of place is doing its job, not failing at it. Anyone got a rule for when a loud button crosses the line into just being ugly?
My uncle ran a hardware store and painted his front door bright yellow when everything else on the block was brown, and he swore it brought in folks who'd never noticed the place before. The trick was he only had that one loud thing, everything else stayed quiet so it didn't look like a circus. A loud button works when it's the only thing yelling.
