Why does the gas pump hold my card hostage for a full 30 seconds after I am done?
I was at a Shell station in Boise last Friday and the screen froze on "processing" for almost 45 seconds after I finished pumping. No spinner, no countdown, just a dead screen, so I stood there wondering if I should walk away or wait. A guy behind me finally yelled that it does this every time and you just have to wait it out. Turns out the pump was pre-authorizing $75 and the machine had no way to tell me that was the hold. I have started using the app instead but that takes six taps before it even finds the station I am standing in front of. Why do these screens show nothing when the fix is just a little message that says "hold placed, this will clear in a minute"?
Does the screen ever flash anything if you tap the card reader or hit cancel? I've had good luck just pulling my card out and walking away once it says remove card, the hold drops off by the time I check my bank later. That dead screen thing is the worst though, a simple "hold placed" line would save everybody the guessing game.
