Baked my first wedding cake this weekend. It actually held together.
I've been doing cakes for about 2 years now, mostly birthdays and baby showers. A friend asked me to do her small wedding cake for 30 people. I was terrified it would lean or crack. I used dowels and a cake board between each of the 3 tiers for the first time. The bottom tier was 10 inches, middle was 8, top was 6. It sat straight for 5 hours at the reception. I almost cried when I saw the photos. Has anyone else had that first big cake moment where you just waited for it to fall?

Kept holding my breath the whole time at my first 3 tier too. I put the tiers on their boards and dowels the night before and literally didn't sleep because I kept picturing the whole thing sliding off in the car. Ended up driving 10 mph under the speed limit with it on the passenger seat floor so it wouldn't tip. When I finally saw it sitting straight on the table I just stood there staring at it for like 5 minutes.

Yeah, the "drive with it on the passenger floor" move is so real. I did that for my first wedding cake and nearly took out a curb cause I was looking at the cake more than the road. One thing that helped me a ton was getting a non-slip rug pad from the dollar store and cutting it to fit the box or board I set the cake on. That stuff grips like crazy and stops the sliding even on sharp turns. Also I started using those little plastic dowel rods that lock into the boards instead of just wooden ones, way less wobble. After a few deliveries you kinda learn the right speed for your car's suspension, but man those first ones are terrifying.
