Dropped $85 on a silicone fondant mat that tore on its second use
I grabbed one of those big silicone fondant mats from a local cake supply place here in Boise about 3 weeks ago. First time I rolled out a batch of marshmallow fondant it worked okay, nothing great. Second time, the edge ripped right where it folds and now it leaks cornstarch all over my bench. $85 for basically two uses, and the store won't take it back since I opened it. Should I go back to just a plain wooden board with powdered sugar, or is there a mat out there that actually holds up?
Did you try contacting the manufacturer directly instead of just the store? Sometimes they'll replace stuff even when the shop won't, since a mat ripping on use two is clearly a defect and not you doing something wrong. I ask because I once spent like $60 on a "professional grade" rolling pin that snapped in half on its first pie crust, and my husband still brings it up at every family dinner like I personally offended the gods of baking. So yeah, I feel your pain on the fancy tool betrayal. For what it's worth, a plain wood board and a good dusting of powdered sugar has never once ripped on me or leaked anything, and it costs about $12.
