Clarifier under the foil, my old boss was right after all
For years I skipped the clarifying shampoo step before a color, figured it was a waste of 10 minutes. Then my former boss from 3 years ago, Tony at Razor's Edge in Cleveland, watched me struggle with uneven tones and made me do a strand test with clarifier first. The difference was obvious, the color grabbed way more even and lasted longer. Now I tell every apprentice I meet, skip that step and you're just guessing with results. Has anyone else fought a basic rule for years then finally gave in?
My friend Dana did the same thing for like 5 years at her salon in Akron. Her client walked out with brassy roots every single time and she kept blaming the developer. Finally she tried a clarifier first and the toner finally took right, no more callbacks. She still brings it up at every class she teaches now.
