Had a seized seatpost on a vintage steel frame come in yesterday

It was a 1980s Peugeot, totally stuck. Tried the usual tricks, nothing worked. Ended up mixing a 50/50 blend of acetone and automatic transmission fluid, let it soak overnight. Came loose this morning with a solid twist from the bench vise. Anyone have a different go-to for this kind of rust weld?

Remember trying that exact mix on an old Raleigh. It worked but man, the smell was something else. My last resort is usually a big can of Kroil if I have it on the shelf. Sometimes I'll even clamp the frame and use a long breaker bar on the post itself, but that's a good way to hurt yourself if it slips.

Clamp the frame and use a long breaker bar on the post itself? That sounds like a great way to break something important.

My buddy up in Portland had a stuck post on an old Schwinn that was a real bear. He tried every trick in the book for a week straight. He finally got desperate and built a jig to hold the frame, then used a six-foot steel pipe on the seatpost as a cheater bar. The post sheared right off, left the bottom half fused in the tube. He had to cut the frame to get it out.
