Overheard a seasoned mechanic say he stopped using Park Tool's chain whip because the handle kept slipping under torque
He said the pins on the hook plate wore down after only 8 months of shop use, so now I'm wondering if I should switch to a solid forged one before mine lets go on a stubborn cassette.

8 months is pretty rough for a shop tool honestly. I had the same issue with mine on a stuck Shimano lockring, the handle just twisted in my hand and I almost punched the workbench. I switched to a Pedro's chain whip with the solid forged hook and a longer handle, and it's been solid for over a year now with zero slip. The pins on the Park one are just too small for the torque you put on them after a while, especially if you're doing a lot of Shimano cassettes where that lockring is torqued to 40Nm. Keep an eye on the rivets on yours, if you see any play at all it's time to retire it before it strips a cog.
