Skip the Park Tool PW-4, my bench vise crushed a stuck freewheel hub after 20 minutes
I had a freewheel that would not budge on a 1990s Trek, so I clamped it in the vise instead of buying the $85 tool, and it spun loose in 20 minutes. Now I keep a cheap vise bolted to my bench and use it for everything, but I'm wondering if I'm putting too much stress on the hub threads.
Man, this brings back memories! I did the same thing on an old Schwinn with a freewheel that was basically welded on there with rust. Tried everything, soaked it in PB Blaster for two days, used a cheater bar, nothing worked. Finally said forget it and threw the wheel in my dad's bench vise, and that thing popped loose in like 15 minutes. The threads were fine afterward too, so I would not worry too much about stress as long as you are not going full gorilla on it. Those old hubs are tougher than people give them credit for. A vise is one of those tools you do not realize you need until you have one, and then you use it for everything. Worst case you mess up a hub that was already stuck, and you were probably replacing it anyway.
