Torque wrench click vs my stubborn hub, glad I double checked

I always thought torque wrenches were overkill for basic hub work, until last Tuesday I snapped a cassette lockring thread on a used wheel from a local co-op. The click felt fine but the bolt was still loose, so I borrowed a calibrated Park Tool model and found I was 15 Nm off. Has anyone else had a torque wrench drift that quietly ruined parts before you caught it?

Park Tool wrenches are good, but I had one years ago that read 20 Nm low after I dropped it on the shop floor once. The click came early, every time, and I ran a whole season of cranks and stems like that before I checked it against a beam style wrench. So yeah, it can happen, but I'm not sure it's as common as people make it out to be. Most of the drift I've seen comes from people using them like breaker bars or never storing them at zero. Maybe the co-op wheel was just already buggered from the start, you know?
