Watched a crew repoint a 1920s wall in 3 days flat - what I saw changed how I prep joints

I was working a pest control job at a old church downtown, and these bricklayers came in to repoint the whole back wall. I watched them for maybe 20 minutes on break. They used a angle grinder with a diamond wheel to cut out the old mortar, then they hit the joints with a air hose before buttering in new stuff. I always just used a chisel and hammer by hand, takes me forever. They did a 10 foot section in like an hour. My question is - does the air hose step actually make a difference or is that just for show? I figure dust would mess with the bond. Has anyone else tried switching tools for repointing and saw a big time save?

Had my tile guy call me out for not back-buttering last month

He pointed to a loose piece in my shower floor and said, 'this is why you always back-butter,' so now I spend the extra 45 seconds per tile and havent had a single hollow sound since, anyone else get called out on something basic they were skipping?

Just hit 500 consecutive days with no lost time accidents on my site

I've been running a medium-sized commercial project in Charlotte for the last 18 months and we crossed 500 days without a lost time injury yesterday. That includes over 80 subcontractors coming and going through framing, MEP rough-in, and now finishing work. The milestone surprised me because I figured someone would have gotten banged up by now with all the different trades sharing the same space. Is there a specific safety program that's actually worked for your crews long term?

Tried using a cheap non-contact voltage tester on a 480V panel and got a nasty surprise

I was doing a panel swap in an old warehouse in Detroit last week and used my usual $20 NCVT to check if the feeders were dead. It beeped at me saying no voltage so I started pulling wires, but my meter showed 277V phase to ground when I double-checked. Turns out those cheap testers can get fooled by induced voltage or bad shielding on old wire. Anyone else had a fake reading from a non-contact tester on industrial gear?

PSA: I hit 50 portfolio views in a day and it freaked me out

I posted my design portfolio on Behance last Tuesday morning and got 50 unique visitors before lunch just from a single forum comment, and now I'm wondering if that traffic spike actually means my work is good or if it was just luck, so has anyone else seen a sudden jump like that and figured out what caused it?

Color picker shortcut I missed for 5 years

I was working on a site redesign for a small bakery in Austin last week and kept going back and forth between my color palette and the design. It was taking forever. Then a coworker showed me you can hold Alt (or Option on Mac) and click any colored shape in Figma to instantly sample it. No more clicking into the fill panel and copying hex codes. Has anyone else been doing this the slow way for way too long?

Took me 6 months to figure out why my glycolic peels were leaving patchy results

I kept getting uneven application with glycolic peels on certain clients. After 6 months of trying different prep steps and blaming my technique, I finally realized it was my neutralization spray nozzle. Had been using the same bottle for 2 years and it started spitting instead of misting. Swapped to a new sprayer last week and my last 4 peels came out smooth and even. Anyone else had a simple tool issue mess with their results for way too long?

Stopped by a shop in Tulsa and noticed nobody uses air ratchets anymore

I was at a transmission shop in Tulsa last Thursday picking up a buddy's torque converter and walked through their bay. Every single tech was using electric impacts and battery ratchets, not one air line hooked up to a tool. Is the industry just done with pneumatic tools or was that shop weird?

My CSS sun disappeared on 3 devices before I figured out the bug

I was at my desk in Portland last Thursday working on a CSS-only sunrise scene with gradients and keyframes. Looked perfect on my monitor, but when I opened it on my phone and tablet, the sun circle just vanished. Turns out I used min-height instead of height on the container for mobile breakpoints. Anyone else had a CSS art piece break across different screen sizes?

A client told me my icons were 'too clever' and it stung but they were right

Last month I was building a dashboard for a local HVAC company in Austin and I spent way too long making custom icons that were super minimal and abstract. I thought they looked slick, but the owner looked at the mockup and said, 'Joel, I got no idea what that squiggle means, is that heat or a snake?' I was pretty defensive at first. But then I went back and replaced the abstract stuff with super literal icons like a little flame for heat and a snowflake for cool. The client approved it right away after that. It made me realize that clever design doesn't help anyone if they can't use it. How do you guys handle getting feedback that feels like it's dumbing down your work?
