Finally got my forge welds to stick after a tip from a guy in Boise

He told me my fire was too dirty, full of clinkers. Said to clear it out every 20 minutes, no matter what. I tried it last weekend on a small leaf project. Cleaned the coal fire like clockwork. The next weld I tried just fused together smooth. Anyone else have a simple fire tip that fixed a big problem?

My buddy in Montana said to always keep a green coal cap on the fire. I was burning my steel with a shallow fire for months. That one change made my welds so much cleaner.

Wait, what's a green coal cap exactly? I've heard of keeping a deep fire but not that specific term. Is it just a thick layer of fresh coal on top? How does that change the heat compared to a shallow fire? I'm trying to picture the setup.
