I finally gave in and tried a proper coal forge after years with propane

For the last five years, I only used a propane forge I built myself, thinking it was cleaner and easier. Last month, a friend in Asheville let me use his coal set-up to work on a large leaf spring, and the heat control was just so much better for moving that much steel. I could really pinpoint the heat in a way my gas forge never allowed, and the piece came out with fewer cold shuts. Has anyone else made the switch and found specific projects where coal is clearly better?

Oh yeah, I read that coal's way better for forge welding.

My propane forge welds just fine, honestly.
