Shoutout to my neighbor who said to quench my first knife in old motor oil

I thought he was just messing with me, but that 10W-30 gave it a perfect, even temper. Anyone have a better quenching medium they'd recommend for a beginner?

My uncle in Hanoi swears by used peanut oil from street vendors. It's cheap, has a high flash point, and gives a consistent color. Might be worth trying if you can find a local source.
