My friend group's game night went from 4 hour marathons to 45 minute sprints
About six months ago, our usual Friday crew of 6 people would sit down with something like Twilight Imperium or Food Chain Magnate and basically lose the whole evening. Nobody complained but you could tell by 10pm folks were just going through the motions, not really into it. Then one guy brought out a copy of The Crew that he got for like $12 on Amazon and suddenly we were playing 4 rounds in an hour and laughing way more than we did during those long slogs. Now we rotate between that, Love Letter, and Skull and nobody even misses the big boxes. Has anyone else seen their group totally change pace like this, or are we just getting old?

The Crew is a great example. For my group it was Codenames that did the trick. We used to play Terraforming Mars and that thing would drag on for 3 hours easy. Now we do 4 or 5 quick rounds of Codenames and people are actually laughing and paying attention the whole time. Do you find that the shorter games get people talking more, or is it mostly just about saving time?

You folks are describing exactly what happened with my group. The 45 minute windows actually let us try more games in a night instead of committing to one long thing. It is not about getting old, it is about realizing that shorter games mean more laughs and less checking phones.
