The guy at the game store in Tempe who told me to 'just buy the expansion'

I was at a local shop last month looking for a new game to play with my regular group. I asked about a game I'd heard was good, and the clerk immediately said I should get the $40 expansion too, before I'd even tried the base game. He said it 'fixed everything' and the base game was 'basically broken' without it. That really rubbed me the wrong way. Now I make a point to never buy an expansion until we've played the base game at least five times. Has anyone else had a store employee push an add-on that hard before you even knew if you liked the game?

Was it a game you'd already heard some buzz about, or was it his favorite that he always pushes? I've seen clerks who get a personal kick out of certain expansions and just assume everyone needs it. It's a bad way to get someone into a hobby.

It's that weird pushy energy some people get when they turn their personal hobby into a sales pitch. You see it everywhere, not just in game stores. Like the friend who won't stop telling you about their new diet, or the guy at the hardware store who insists you need the most expensive tool for a simple job. They forget what it's like to be new and just want to share their own excitement, but it ends up pushing people away instead of pulling them in. Makes you want to figure things out on your own just to avoid the lecture.
