Just got schooled on a tricky flange weld in Spokane last week
I was working on a boiler feed pump flange and kept getting porosity in the root pass, no matter how clean I got it. An old hand on site told me to try a 1/16th inch gap and a slower travel speed, and it sealed up perfect on the first try. What's the one piece of weld advice that saved your skin on a tough joint?

James, scared of a 1/16th gap? That's the standard for a lot of pipe welds. The old hand was right. A tight gap with a slow travel speed lets the puddle fill in properly. If you run too wide of a gap or move too fast, you're just asking for trouble. I've seen guys blow holes trying to bridge a big gap on thin wall.

Wait, a 1/16th gap? That's basically nothing (I'd have been scared to even try it).
