That $300 'premium' welding helmet was a total waste for me
Bought a fancy auto-darkening helmet with all the bells and whistles off a recommendation from a guy on a job in Houston. Paid $300 for it, and the damn thing kept flickering on me every time I got near a bright arc. Went back to my old $80 fixed shade after two weeks, no issues since. Anyone else get burned by the overpriced gear hype, or am I just picky about my eyes?

Honestly sounds like you got a bad unit, not a bad category of helmet. I've seen guys run $300 digitals for years without one flicker, and I've also seen cheap fixed shades give people headaches because the shade is wrong for their amperage. You bought one thing, it didn't work, and now you're blaming the whole price range. That's like saying all trucks are junk because your buddy's used one broke down. The flicker thing is usually a sensor placement issue or a defective battery, not a "luxury feature" scam. Maybe give the fixed shade a break and try a different auto model from a store that lets you test it on an actual arc before dropping cash.
