Every book club picks the same five authors and it's killing the conversation
Our group has read a Murakami or an Atwood novel every single month since March, and when I brought up a translated crime thriller from Iceland last Tuesday, three people said they'd rather re-read The Handmaid's Tale, so are we actually debating books or just swapping comfort reads?
Used to roll my eyes at the "we only read the safe stuff" complaint, figured people just want what they want. Then my own club went six months without a single book that made anyone actually disagree, and I got it.
