Our book club read a romance novel for the first time and it totally backfired

I mean, we usually stick to literary fiction, but last month someone suggested we try a popular romance book to shake things up. I thought it would be a fun, light break, but the debate got way more heated than our usual talks. Half the group argued the main character's choices were empowering, while the other half called the whole plot unrealistic and harmful. It got so intense that two people almost left the club over it. I learned that bringing in a new genre doesn't just change the book, it changes how people argue and what they think is worth fighting about. Has anyone else had a book club meeting completely derail because of a genre switch?
