Am I the only one who switched to hard boards after a customer called my limp covers "sad"?
I've used flexible paper covers for years, but a regular at the Tacoma farmers market picked up one of my notebooks last Saturday and asked why it felt so floppy. That stung more than I expected, so I pressed a stack of 2.5mm binder's board this weekend and the spine finally holds itself tight. Now I'm second-guessing every softcover on my shelf, so how are you all deciding when a project needs real board?
2.5mm binder's board is no joke, that stuff fights back when you try to cut it. My first attempt at hard covers looked like a toddler did it with safety scissors, so you're already ahead of me. For deciding, I look at how the book gets used: a market notebook that lives in a tote bag all day needs that stiff spine to survive, while something that sits on a desk can stay soft. A 60-page sketchbook gets paper covers, anything past 100 pages or headed for travel gets board.
