Can we talk about how a 15 minute talk with my grandma changed how I pick thread?
My grandma used to bind books for the county library back in the 70s and she watched me stress over a rebind job at her kitchen table in Dayton last Sunday. I had three spools of linen thread laid out and I kept switching because the colors looked close enough to the cover. She picked up one spool, held it against the spine, and said the thread should match the sections not the cover, because nobody sees the thread till the book falls apart. I sat there kinda stunned because I had been matching cover colors for almost 4 years now. She also said she used to write the thread weight and date on the inside of every spine she did, and when books came back decades later she could tell right away what held up. So now I'm thinking about starting a little log on the inside of my own bindings, just weight and date in pencil. Anyone here keep notes inside their bindings, or do you write it down somewhere else?
